Applied Science and Mathematics
In order to install HVAC systems that work (and work safely), you’ll need to have a good working knowledge of some basic principles of science and mathematics. These include:
- Electricity, including conduction, insulation, and voltages
- Heat transfer
- Air pressure, movement, and combustion
- Venting and exhausting heating and air transfer systems
- The refrigeration cycle
- Chemical properties of different heating fuels and refrigerants
You’ll also become familiar with common mathematical operations used to calculate voltages, weights, temperatures, and more.
Industry Terminology and Documents
HVAC professionals work on construction sites and with complex electrical systems. You will need to be able to read, interpret, and act on instructions given in blueprints, electrical schematics, and diagrams.
To install and repair heating and air conditioning systems, you’ll work with many different materials. In your training program, you’ll learn which materials are suitable for which types of applications (for instance, certain plastics melt easily and shouldn’t be used in heating systems) and how to install them safely. Materials may include copper, steel, or plastic piping, as well as copper wire.
Installation, Maintenance and Repair
You’ll get hands-on practice using industry-standard tools to install new heating and air conditioning systems, or repair key parts such as motors, filters, fans, and metal or plastic ductwork. Specific skills may include:
- Using manifold gauges and other equipment to check a system’s operation
- Repairing motors
- Replacing filters
- Patching or fabricating ductwork and pipes
- Safe removal of old equipment and fuels or refrigerants, such as freon

Energy-Saving and Alternative HVAC Systems
Finally, no modern HVAC training program would forget to introduce you to energy-efficient practices and the new world of alternative energy systems.
