Medical Insurance Billing and Coding

Medical Insurance Billing and Coding Overview

Although the Affordable Care Act (also known as "Obamacare") has changed major aspects of America's health insurance industry, one thing has not changed: the need to process insurance claims.

The Altierus MIBC program prepares you to become part of a medical office support staff, with a particular focus on insurance claims preparation and processing. As a student in this program, you'll study basic anatomy and physiology, the body's various life-sustaining systems, and the diseases and conditions you're most likely to encounter in a physician's office. You'll also learn the universal coding system used to define thousands of medical conditions, diagnoses, surgeries, tests and other procedures. You'll practice completing diagnostic reports, insurance claims forms and other documentation used in most medical practices.

You can complete the Medical Insurance Billing and Coding program in as little as 8 months. As an Altierus graduate, you will be ready to apply for positions in:

Medical Insurance Billing and Coding Courses

The Altierus Medical Insurance Billing and Coding (MIBC) program is designed to provide you with a marketable combination of knowledge and skills you need to enter the field of medical records processing. Your courses will cover range of related topics ranging from basic medicine to current office skills.

As a student in the Altierus Medical Insurance Billing and Coding program, your typical courses will include:

Your classes will be a combination of traditional classroom lectures and hands-on laboratory skills training. In the lab, you'll get a chance to develop your keyboarding and computer abilities. You'll also practice preparing insurance claims forms in both their hard copy and electronic formats. Your instructors will be health care industry professionals who know what today's employers demand. And much of your work will be done in small groups, so you'll have plenty of ways to get support when you need it.

By the time you graduate, you should have the knowledge, skills and confidence to become a valued team member to any modern medical practice.

Note: This Medical Insurance Billing and Coding program description is not necessarily reflective of every MIBC program offered across all Altierus campuses. This is a summary of general topics learned within most schools. Please check your campus catalog for specific details about what is taught in the Medical Insurance Billing and Coding program near you.

Medical Insurance Billing and Coding Careers

When you graduate from the Altierus Medical Insurance Billing and Coding (MIBC) career training program, you will have a number of career tracks available to you. In most medical offices, billing and coding are two separate specialties.

Coding specialists prepare reports using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, otherwise known as the ICD. The ICD contains literally tens of thousands of codes to define all the diseases, conditions, tests, surgeries and procedures known to medical science. As a coding specialist, you would use the ICD codes to document all the diagnoses and activities performed by the physicians in the office where you work.

Billing specialists use these same ICD codes to submit claims to insurance carriers, which can also include state and federal agencies (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, etc.). Billing specialists can also work on the other side of the desk as insurance company employees. In this capacity, they review submissions for completeness and accuracy to help determine a claim's validity.

You might also use your new MIBC skills to get a job with more generalized duties, such as a medical office assistant or medical office receptionist. In such a situation, completing medical forms and submitting insurance claims may be just two of several tasks you perform.

Employment of health information technicians is projected to grow 15 percent from 2014 to 2024. An aging population will require more medical services, and health information technicians will be needed to organize and manage the older generations' health information data. Additional records, coupled with widespread use of electronic health records (EHRs) by all types of healthcare providers, will lead to an increased need for technicians to organize and manage the associated information in all areas of the healthcare industry.**

Employment is not guaranteed. Your own hard work, professionalism, attitude, and other factors impact your employment opportunities and pay.
