Surgical Technologist

Surgical Technologist Program Overview

If working in an operating room interests you, training to be a surgical technologist is a great way to start. Becoming a surgical technologist provides you with the basic background and skills needed by anyone who works in an operating theater.

The Surgical Technologist program at Altierus is designed to prepare you for entry-level surgical tech positions in hospitals, surgical centers and other medical facilities. In this program, you'll study surgical procedures, asepsis and patient care skills, microbiology and surgical instrumentation and equipment.

Note: Program schedules and availability vary by campus.

Surgical Technologist Courses

Our Surgical Technologist program is designed to prepare you to provide critical support services to surgeons, circulating nurses and other members of a surgical team. The surgical tech courses cover a wide range of topics, from basic anatomy and physiology to 21st Century surgical procedures.

As a Surgical Technologist student as Altierus, you'll have an opportunity to study:

You will also participate in surgery practicums as part of your training. The two-year Surgical Technology associate degree programs covers all of the topics above, but also includes classes in:

Surgical Tech Certification

As an Altierus graduate of the surgical technologist program, you will be eligible to take the national certification exam by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Pass this exam and you will have the distinction of being able to work as a certified surgical technologist (CST). To take the certification exam, you must be a graduate of either a Commission of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or a program approved by the Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

Note: This Surgical Technologist program description is not necessarily reflective of every Surgical Technologist program offered across all Altierus campuses. This is a summary of general topics learned within most schools. Please check your campus catalog for specific details about what is taught in the Surgical Technologist program near you.

Surgical Technologist Careers

So what do surgical technologists do? Among their many duties, surgical technologists prepare the operating room prior to surgical procedures, assist surgeons and nurses during operations, and then sterilize the operating room when the procedure is complete. They may also work directly with patients, preparing them mentally and physically for the procedures they are about to undergo.

As a working surgical technologist, you'll get to see first-hand how surgery is performed. You'll acquire an understanding of each team member's role. You'll experience the thrill and satisfaction that comes when a difficult surgery is successful. And you will no doubt see the steps medical professionals must take when events in the operating room don't go as planned.

If you find these experiences stimulating and rewarding, you may eventually choose to pursue further training so you can take on even more responsibilities.

Places you may be employed include:

As of 2014, about 100,000 surgical techs were employed nationwide, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That number is expected to increase by more than 14,700 through 2024.

Note: Program availability, version and schedules vary by campus. Please check your campus catalog for specific details about which surgical technologist programs programs are available.

*Your own hard work, professionalism, experience, work attitude, local market and other factors will impact your personal employment opportunities and pay.
